Health Licenses

Dwelling (rental) Permit & Smoke Detector Certificates

Apply for a Dwelling (rental) Permit and a Smoke Detector Certificate inspection. The City of Garfield, NJ requires inspections when residential property is sold or for changes in tenancy for residential rental properties.

Fees for the inspection depend on the type, when it was requested, and type of property being inspected. All Fees must be paid in full before an inspection will be scheduled.

City Clerk Licenses and Permits

You may apply/pay for Licenses, such as, laundromat & dry cleaning, vehicle sales business, secondhand merchandise dealer and Permits, such as, film & video, canvassing or soliciting, special events like parades, garage sale**, yard sale, complete a landlord identity registration.
**Beginning January 1, 2024, City Hall will be closed on Fridays. We will NOT be able to process garage sale permits after Thursday at 5:00 PM to Sunday at 12:00 AM.

Apply for, renew, or check the status of your Pet LicenseThe City of Garfield requires that all dogs and cats within the city limits be licensed. You may apply for a one year license. You will be required to provide a copy of the rabies vaccination for your pet as well as proof if the pet has been spayed or neutered.

Pay Construction Permit Balances / Apply for ...Due to state requirements for raised seals on plans, the City of Garfield is currently only able to accept online applications for Building sub-code and Tank Removal permits. Any other applications (electric, plumbing, fire protection, elevator, and mechanical) must be brought into the office. We are also accepting applications for Continued Certificates of Occupancy.

Invoices for other project types, submitted in person, may be paid online.
